About this work

The etching frames only the lower body of a large birdlike creature: two heavy, taloned feet with splayed, clenched toes grip the edge of a stone block, while folded wing feathers rise into view on either side above them. The rest of the body is cropped out of frame, leaving the feet and wings as the sole subject.

Tight, controlled crosshatching builds volume and weight through dense overlapping black lines, while patches of bare paper stand for light striking the claws and stone. The extreme close cropping and anatomical precision give the small print an intense, almost forensic focus on an ambiguous, part-avian, part-mythical creature.
